Then the chalk paint. Then another coat of chalk paint. Perhaps a little distressing around the edges to give it that authentic vintage appearance.

Never mind that the dresser was authentically vintage before anyone touched it.

A few hours later, the transformation is complete.

The dresser is now advertised on Facebook Marketplace as beautifully updated.

Updated from what, exactly?

When Wood Became the Problem

There was a time when furniture was chosen for its wood.

Walnut, cherry, mahogany, oak. The grain mattered. The color mattered. The way the wood aged mattered.

A cabinetmaker might select boards for the way their grain patterns complemented one another. Veneers could be carefully matched, decorative inlays painstakingly fitted, and finishes applied to reveal rather than conceal the material beneath.

These weren’t accidental details.

They were the point.

Yet somewhere along the way, natural wood began to be treated as something requiring correction.

Too brown. Too orange. Too traditional. Too much like Grandma’s house.

And so we painted it.

Not because the finish was beyond saving or the wood was unattractive, but because someone had decided that brown furniture needed a makeover.

The Chalk Paint Revolution Nobody Asked For

Chalk paint has its uses.

Unfortunately, it also convinced an extraordinary number of people that every piece of wooden furniture was an unfinished craft project.

Suddenly, dressers, sideboards, dining chairs, and china cabinets were being painted in an assortment of carefully marketed colors with names suggesting French villages and English country houses.

A little sanding along the edges produced the obligatory distressed finish.

Dark wax was applied to make the piece look old.

Which is particularly amusing when the furniture was already seventy-five years old.

Original brass handles were removed. Decorative details disappeared beneath thick layers of paint. Beautifully figured wood grain vanished entirely.

And the resulting transformation was celebrated as a rescue.

From what?

Good craftsmanship?

Not Every Piece Is Sacred

Before anyone hides the paintbrushes, let’s establish something.

Some furniture absolutely should be painted.

A battered pine dresser with missing veneer, a badly damaged finish, or repairs that cannot reasonably be concealed might benefit enormously from a thoughtful coat of paint.

There are inexpensive pieces with little character to lose and plenty to gain.

And there are rooms where painted furniture is exactly right.

The objection isn’t to paint.

It’s to the assumption that paint is automatically an improvement.

A beautiful walnut chest doesn’t become more sophisticated because someone covers it in chalk paint.

An antique dresser doesn’t become more valuable because its original hardware has been replaced with fashionable knobs.

And modernized is not a synonym for better.

The Hardware Wasn’t an Accident

Original furniture hardware deserves a moment of its own.

Those brass handles, escutcheons, and drawer pulls were often selected specifically for the proportions and character of the piece.

Their shape, finish, and placement formed part of the overall design.

Yet they’re frequently the first things discarded during a makeover.

Out go the beautifully aged brass pulls.

In come whatever knobs happen to be fashionable that year.

There’s nothing inherently wrong with new hardware. But putting the same fashionable knob on every piece of furniture is rather like giving every person the same haircut and calling it an improvement.

Sometimes the original hardware needs cleaning.

Sometimes a missing piece needs replacing.

And sometimes that darkened brass is exactly what the dresser should be wearing.

The Difference Between Restoring and Reinventing

Restoration asks a question: What does this piece need?

A makeover often begins with a different one: How can I make this look like something else?

Those are not necessarily the same undertaking.

A worn finish might need careful cleaning, repair, or refinishing. A sticking drawer might need adjustment. A loose joint might need glue and a clamp.

None of these repairs makes particularly exciting social media content.

There’s no dramatic reveal when a drawer finally slides properly.

But there is a quiet satisfaction in preserving something that was made well enough to last.

And there’s a certain irony in taking a solid-wood dresser that has survived for eighty years and altering it to resemble a mass-produced piece designed to follow this season’s trend.

The Trouble With Trends

Decorating trends are not inherently terrible. They can introduce fresh ideas, challenge tired conventions, and encourage people to look at familiar things differently.

The trouble begins when every new trend requires us to dislike what we already own.

One decade celebrates dark wood. Another insists everything should be painted. Then natural wood returns to fashion, and suddenly everyone is stripping paint from furniture that never needed painting in the first place.

Meanwhile, perfectly good pieces have been sanded, painted, distressed, waxed, repainted, and occasionally stripped again in pursuit of a look that was never going to last.

It’s an exhausting amount of work to make something timeless conform to something temporary.

Before You Open the Paint

Look at the piece.

Really look at it.

Is the wood attractive? Is the construction sound? Are the proportions good? Does the hardware belong to it? Could the finish be repaired rather than concealed?

And perhaps most importantly, are you changing it because you genuinely prefer the result—or because someone has convinced you that what you own is out of fashion?

A well-made dresser doesn’t need to apologize for being brown.

It doesn’t need to match the kitchen island, the bathroom vanity, or the latest collection of carefully curated neutral interiors.

It needs to be useful, beautiful in its own way, and suited to the room in which it lives.

Sometimes that calls for paint.

Sometimes it calls for furniture polish and leaving well enough alone.

The Absolutely Not Verdict

Paint the damaged pine chest. Rescue the battered flea-market find. Give an unremarkable piece a new life if that’s what it needs.

But the beautifully figured walnut dresser with its original brass hardware?

Please put down the chalk paint.

Not everything old needs updating. And not everything updated has been improved.

Piper Janie | The Absolutely Not

In defense of beautiful wood, original hardware, and knowing when to put down the chalk paint.
